To foster a shared vision, ensure smooth advancement of institutional initiatives, and promote continuous improvement in educational quality, the School of Economics and Management (SEM) at China University of Petroleum (East China) held its New Semester Work Conference on March 10. The school’s leadership team and all faculty and staff attended the meeting, which was chaired by Party Secretary Wang Jun.
At the beginning of the conference, Wang Jun introduced several newly appointed young faculty members who joined the school last semester. With diverse academic backgrounds, solid expertise, and rich practical experience, the new faculty members bring fresh energy to the teaching and research workforce of the school.
Professor Jian Ling, Deputy Dean (acting administrative head), conveyed the key messages from President Hao Fang's address at the university’s semester-opening meeting. He emphasized four focal points for the semester: resources, governance, planning, and culture. Reviewing the school’s achievements during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Professor Jian highlighted important progress in talent cultivation, research, faculty development, and other key areas. He outlined the school’s major tasks for 2024, and summarized accomplishments over the past year in areas including faculty recruitment, teaching competitions, research output, student training, and international accreditation. He also proposed strategic directions and actionable measures for future development.
Deputy Dean Liu Bingquan provided a comprehensive overview of the school’s efforts in undergraduate teaching in recent years and offered recommendations for the ongoing undergraduate education quality review. He emphasized the need to address recurring challenges in classroom teaching, curriculum design, and supervision of graduation projects. Liu encouraged faculty to actively engage in pedagogical innovation to invigorate the learning environment.
Deputy Party Secretary Meng Zhaogang focused on student affairs, analyzing the new challenges brought by increased enrollment and more diverse student needs. Going forward, the student affairs office will prioritize mental health, career development, and innovation and entrepreneurship training. Efforts will also be made to improve the quality of student services and help students cultivate stronger self-development capabilities.
In his concluding remarks, Secretary Wang Jun conveyed the key points from the speech by Wu Qiangming, Secretary of the University Party Committee, delivered at the university-wide work conference. He acknowledged that the school has made commendable achievements under the strong leadership of the Party Committee, and that most of the school’s targets for the 14th Five-Year Plan are on track. At the same time, he stressed that the school still faces considerable challenges in the years ahead. Wang called for continued efforts to uphold academic integrity and teaching ethics, enhance classroom quality, strengthen internal governance, and carry forward the school’s culture. Quoting the saying, “No matter how long the road, we will reach it through action; no matter how difficult the task, we will accomplish it through determination,” he urged all faculty and staff to stay committed and courageous in the pursuit of excellence.
This conference served as a valuable opportunity to unite the school community around shared goals and provided clear guidance for the next phase of high-quality development.
